Buckfastleigh, Devon. October 3, 1978. 8:55 in the evening. Three 14-year-old boys had just seen a UFO. Then they saw something else. Some 50 yards away stood a very muscular figure, seven feet tall, dressed in a diving suit. It was not alone. Later, a second figure appeared. About six feet tall. Glowing. It darted behind a concrete motorway support post. The account survives in a single short paragraph, passed from a 1979 flying saucer bulletin into the humanoid catalogues. The boys were never named. The original bulletin has not been seen by those who catalogued it.
Buckfastleigh is a town in Devon, beside the Devon Expressway, the A38. In 1978 its bypass was still new, finished only four or five years earlier. Because of the hills, the road crosses part of the town on a viaduct. Two viaducts carry it there, Whitecleave and Mardle. The Mardle viaduct has a concrete deck on concrete piers.
