June 1873. A farm five or six miles from Bonham, Texas. A cloud passed over the fields. Inside it, the farmer saw something resembling an enormous serpent. It was as large and as long as a telegraph pole, of a yellow striped color. It seemed to float along without any effort. It coiled itself up. It turned over. It thrust forward its huge head. Several parties of men and boys at work in the fields watched it too. They were seriously frightened. That same June, two witnesses at Fort Scott, Kansas, described a huge serpent encircling the sun. The New York Times called the Bonham story the very worst case of delirium tremens on record. Later writers turned both into flying machines.
