January 16, 1966. About four in the morning. Eugène Coquil, a 23-year-old carpenter, was driving his Renault Dauphine on the road from Morlaix to Callac in rural Brittany. Beams of light moved in a field. A tractor, he thought. He stopped and walked toward them. Then the lights came toward him. They rose over an embankment four or five metres up. No engine. No sound at all. He ran. The thing followed, hovered perfectly still over his car, then settled gently on a patch of ground a few metres away. Coquil fled, stalling his engine in his hurry. When he finally drove off, it was still sitting there.
