Bismarck Airport Tower Lights

November 26, 1968 · Bismarck Municipal Airport control tower, Bismarck, North Dakota, United States

November 26, 1968. About 5:40 p.m. The sky over Bismarck, North Dakota, was clear and darkening. In the airport control tower, controllers watched a bright round white light moving north at moderate speed. Then a second light appeared, heading south. The northbound light stopped. The southbound one reversed and came back to take position beside it. The pair hung there for about ten seconds. Then both raced away and vanished within seconds. A pilot in the air saw it too. Radar at Great Falls, Montana, reportedly tracked the objects moving erratically at high speeds. The next day, according to J. Allen Hynek, that radar confirmation was officially denied.

Context

Late November 1968. North Dakota had already lived through a strange autumn. A month earlier, on October 24, a B-52H crew and radar operators near Minot AFB had their own encounter. That is a separate case. This one began in the control tower at Bismarck Municipal Airport, which Richard H. Hall calls Bismarck International Airport.
