February 19, 1968. Shortly before noon. On a snowbound farm five miles west of Bengough, Saskatchewan, Martha Heggs was working in her kitchen with her baby and her young son. Then came the sound. A piercing, high-pitched whine that set her whole body tingling. Outside, a small domed disc of dull aluminium was slowly circling the transformer pole. For about 20 minutes it toured the farmyard a few feet off the ground. It hovered over abandoned cars, tractors, fuel tanks and the electric well pump. The dog cowered in the snow. Sixteen cattle bolted for the sheds. Then the object slipped out low along the windbreak, heading north, and was gone.

The farm

Monday, 19 February 1968. Snow lay over the Heggs farm, about five miles west of Bengough in south-central Saskatchewan. Mrs. Martha Heggs was working in her kitchen, with only her baby and her pre-school son. Her husband was not at home. Locally, NICAP would later say, she was known as "thoroughly reliable."
