The Barnston Silver Man

August 1977 · Road junction near Barnston, Wirral, Merseyside, England, United Kingdom

August 1977. Barnston, a village on the Wirral, north-east of Heswall. Several motorists reported the same strange sight. A humanoid figure stood in the middle of a road junction. It was silver. In one telling, a spacecraft stood beside it. No witness has ever been named. No photograph has surfaced. That year Britain was living through a UFO flap, and silver figures were being reported from Pembrokeshire to Merseyside. Barnston became one more chapter of that strange season, and one of its most elusive. Today the story lives on mainly through a 2023 newspaper column by Liverpool writer Tom Slemen. The junction itself has never been identified.

Context

1977 was a strange year in the British skies. On 4 February, at Broad Haven in Pembrokeshire, fourteen schoolchildren reported a landed UFO, and six said they saw a humanoid in a "silverish suit". Broad Haven became the centre of the Welsh Triangle wave.

Then the sightings spread into England. In Macclesfield, children reported a flying disc over their playground. And on the Wirral, in Merseyside, a village called Barnston had a visitor of its own.

The sighting

August 1977. No source gives the day. Barnston is a village north-east of Heswall. Somewhere near it, at a road junction that has never been named, several motorists reported a mysterious encounter. A humanoid figure, silver in colour, stood in the middle of the junction.

One summary adds that the figure was seen next to a spacecraft. Then the detail runs thin. No surviving account describes the craft's shape, size, lights or sound. None says the figure moved, gestured or tried to communicate. It simply stood there.

A story with few footprints

The case is known almost entirely through one telling. On 16 July 2023, the Wirral Globe published "The Silver Man of Barnston" in Tom Slemen's Haunted Wirral column. Slemen is a Liverpool writer of ghost and anomaly stories. In June 2025, Bernard O'Leary of the music history blog Off The Records used Barnston as an example of how Britain's 1977 flap spread out of Wales. His version speaks of several motorists, and mentions no craft.

No witness has ever been named. No photograph, film or physical trace has surfaced. No Ministry of Defence, police or UFO group file is known.

The debate

Nobody has offered a specific hoax claim or conventional explanation for Barnston. Summaries of Slemen's other Globe columns describe their claims as unverified. In one, a ghost story set at the Moreton Cross roundabout, he says he found no record of a murder that later retellings had assumed. No 1977 report has yet been found to check the Barnston story against.

There is a cautionary tale from the same year. At Broad Haven, an MoD investigator reportedly suggested "a local prankster" might be involved, and a later account says Glyn Edwards admitted in 1996 to wandering the area in a silver suit in 1977 as a prank. That confession concerns Broad Haven. It says nothing about Barnston.

The silver men

Barnston sits among a curious run of silver figures. Albert Rosales's humanoid catalogue lists a very tall figure near a garden in Huyton in early January 1977, and a "silver-suited figure" at Rainford on 2 January, possibly in 1978. In March 1978, near the Risley nuclear site outside Warrington, Ken Edwards reportedly saw a 7 ft silver man cross the road, shoot light beams from his eyes and pass through a security fence. Scotland had its own Bathgate Hills "Silver Man" in 1988.

The Barnston figure remains the quietest of them. A silver figure in a junction, in the summer of 1977. The full account may still be waiting in the pages of a local paper.
