Arrúbal, La Rioja. Friday, 29 November 1974. About six in the evening. Around ten schoolchildren were playing football on a vacant field near the village school. Óscar Sagasti saw it first. A silvery, elongated object with very bright orange lights, moving over their heads. It made no sound. Large letters ran along its hull, like an M, an X and an L. It zigzagged. It stopped dead. The boys threw stones, but it was too high. "Estaba alto, alto, alto." Then it rose slowly into the clouds, towards Logroño. A week later the press had a name for it. "El OVNI de Logroño".
Arrúbal is a small village in the comarca of Logroño, in La Rioja, about 20 km from Logroño itself. It sits close to the Recajo aerodrome near Agoncillo. In the mid 1970s the region would become part of what local researchers called a wave of sightings across the Basque Country, Navarre and La Rioja.
