Summer 1869. Arcadia valley, Crawford County, Kansas. The settlers had a new sensation. Something walked the valley that looked so near the human form that men were unwilling to shoot it. It had a stooping gait, very long arms and immense hands or claws. Its hairy face wore a most ferocious expression. Fences were often found down, and stock roamed free in the cornfields. Over sixty citizens turned out to hunt it. It escaped. For several days it stayed out of sight. Then Old Sheff came back, seemingly as savage as ever. Within weeks the story had crossed the continent, and Mark Twain was mocking the wild man craze. A rival paper called it a political slur.

The sighting

A correspondent of the St. Louis Democrat wrote that the valley was "having a new sensation", one that was "nothing less then the discovery of a wild man, for a gorilla, or 'what is it?'" "It has so near a resemblance to the human form that men are unwilling to shoot it." It had a stooping gait, very long arms and immense hands or claws. Those who had been near it described a hairy face with "a most ferocious expression of countenance." It generally walked on its hind legs, but sometimes on all fours.
