The Akureyri Spheres

October 26, 1952 · Akureyri, Eyjafjörður, northern Iceland, Iceland
25Thinly documented UAP Sphere 17 sources

October 26, 1952. A Sunday morning in the north of Iceland. Clouds hung over Akureyri, their bases between 600 and 1000 meters, and there was no wind at all. Then three civilians saw them. Four or five spherical objects, moving at high speed, proceeding north. No sound. No flame. For two minutes they were in view. The story reached the newspaper Morgunblaðið. From there it reached the United States Air Force, which entered it in the files of Project Blue Book. The verdict was brief. Insufficient Data for Evaluation. Today the case survives as two pages of paper and a question nobody ever answered.

Context

In 1952 the skies over Iceland were drawing attention. The United States Air Force had a presence at Keflavík, and its files from that year hold several Icelandic reports. The local press was watching too. In June 1952, Morgunblaðið reported flying saucers seen over the Reykjavík area, said to have moved north toward the East Fjords. In September, sightings were logged during the NATO exercise Operation Mainbrace in the North Atlantic.
