In the archive's cryptid cases, the Smithsonian Institution turns up as the scientific authority that monsters are sent to, or that they cannot survive. 1893. By the popular account, a few Smithsonian scientists announced a trip to Rhinelander to inspect the hodag, and Shepard admitted the hoax. No primary Smithsonian document has been found. In 1897 William Miller said he shipped the Gowrow carcass to the Institution. It never arrived. Then came the Minnesota Iceman in 1968. John Napier investigated for the Smithsonian and judged the creature a carnival exhibit of latex rubber and hair.
