As director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover followed the flying saucer question from his desk. July 10, 1947. Brig. Gen. George F. Schulgen asked the Bureau to help question witnesses of the summer's flying disc wave. Hoover wrote by hand that the FBI must insist on full access to any discs recovered. That August, Special Agent Jack B. Wilcox reported to him on the Maury Island Incident, filed under Security Matter X. In 1950, during the Oak Ridge radar-visual flap, the FBI logged 16 unidentified radar targets. Hoover ordered an inquiry into possible radar jamming. Then the sightings stopped.
