earth lights

Term 3 stories, 1904 to 1979

A theory of lights born from the ground itself. Its name is tied to Paul Devereux, who in the 1980s mapped the Egryn Lights of 1904 and, on geologists' advice, linked them to the Mochras Fault running almost directly under Egryn. The sightings, he found, were strung out like beads on a thread. He later included the Hornet Spook Light in Earth Lights Revelation (1989), where earth lights stood among several proposals beside refraction and swamp gas. At Wollaton Park in 1979, Earp suggested faults in the coalfield lay behind the children's gnomes. The theory remains disputed.
