This is a CIA-released, unclassified translation of an article from Moscow Pravda dated 15 April 1991, carried in a message titled "Diverging Opinions on Cause of Sasovo Explosion" and approved for release in May 2000. It describes a powerful midnight explosion on 12 April near Sasovo in Ryazan Oblast. The blast damaged roofs and windows and left a crater 28 meters wide and about 4 meters deep. Local explanations ranged from old munitions, an air bomb, a meteorite and UFOs to the military's view that ammonium nitrate exploded. The cause remained unresolved.
