The Valentich Disappearance over Bass Strait

21 October 1978. Just after sunset. A 20-year-old pilot named Frederick Valentich was flying a rented Cessna across Bass Strait toward King Island. At 19:06 he radioed Melbourne. Was there any known traffic below five thousand feet? There was not.
