Toronto. A summer night in 1925. Dozens of sitters filled the old Sovereign Hall on Dovercourt Road. The lights went out. From a cabinet open at the front, a figure emerged into the dark. A white robe. Long hair. A flowing beard. It came and went several times, shrouded in mist, vanishing back into the cabinet as the ectoplasm faded. Two of the sitters were not believers. They were Sam Wilson and Richard Mulholland of the Toronto Police Morality Squad. They switched on a light. Women screamed. And the ghost of Dovercourt Road was taken to jail.

Context

Summer 1925. The Rev. Arthur Hildreth arrived in Canada from Los Angeles to lead the East Side Spiritualist Church in Hamilton. He said he had attended his first séance at 33. Later, he claimed, he channelled Martin Luther, founded a Spiritualist magazine and became a preacher.
