Ward End, Birmingham. The vicious winter of late 1981. Night after night, stones came down on the houses of Thornton Road. Windows shattered. Roof tiles cracked. The residents could not find where they came from. To them, the stones seemed to come from nowhere. The police moved in. Officers camped outside overnight with night sights, image intensifiers and automatic cameras. The stones kept falling. Many were strangely clean, as if scrubbed, and carried no fingerprints. Chief Inspector Len Turley's team observed only wildlife. By the end of 1982 the active inquiry had stopped. No arrests. The case left open. Some writers have called it a poltergeist.
