October 1872. A boarding house beside the railroad depot at Surrency, Georgia. On a Friday evening, sticks of wood began flying into the rooms from directions no one could explain. After dark it was brickbats. They fell from above, through a house with every door and window shut. One landed hot beside a visiting reporter. The family clock raced at about five hours a minute. At dinner, ears of corn dropped from the ceiling. Allen Powell Surrency said 75 or 100 witnesses could vouch for it. Excursion trains, the story goes, brought the curious to see for themselves. The disturbances were said to fade only with his death in 1877.

Context
