3 May 1943. Occupied Warsaw. In an attic in Siekierki, a 12-year-old girl named Władysława Fronczak looked out through a small window pane. Above a flowering cherry tree stood a figure. A young woman, barefoot, in a white gown the colour of searchlights. A little white cloud beneath her feet. The girl rubbed her eyes. The figure did not disappear. For six years the visions returned, first of Mary, then of Jesus. Prayer gatherings grew around the tree, and German soldiers never intervened. A second visionary came. A chapel rose from the rubble of the city. Today a sanctuary stands there. The Church has never ruled on whether the apparitions are authentic.

Context

Spring 1943. Warsaw was under German occupation. Siekierki was a village-like district on the Vistula, now part of Mokotów. Władysława Fronczak, called Władzia, was 12. Her poor, working-class family lived in the attic of ul. Gościniec 6. She had been praying for a boy who escaped from the ghetto.

The first apparition

3 May 1943. The feast of Our Lady Queen of Poland. A May devotion had just ended. At about 20:30, on a calm evening with the fruit trees in bloom, she looked out of the attic window. On the cherry tree, where the trunk divides into branches, she saw a figure.

It did not stand directly on the tree. Beneath its feet was a little white cloud. The gown was white, "the colour of searchlights, of fluorescent tubes, as if of mist." A great brightness beat out from the whole figure. Beside it, the white cherry blossoms seemed dead. She opened the small window and rubbed her eyes. The figure did not disappear. Hands folded. Barefoot. A white rosary on the right hand. A young woman of about 16, with light wavy hair and blue eyes. When Władzia began to pray, the figure lowered itself toward her.

Six years of visions

The visions continued until 15 September 1949. On 29 May 1943, asked when the war would end, she saw "1945" beside Mary on a ribbon of light. From 28 June 1943 Jesus appeared too, first beside Mary and later alone, about 50 times by the shrine's count. On 11 November 1943 a little star appeared above Mary's head. Seven birds sang and "danced" in her honour. One message warned of "a great punishment, a heavy cross."

On 28 May 1943 a second visionary arrived. Bronisława Kuczewska, an adult mystic, said the Virgin had sent her to the spot. She reported her own visions there until 1981. Prayer gatherings around the tree grew steadily. German soldiers stationed nearby never intervened. No source says anyone else saw the figure.

Investigation

Her parents, Jan and Józefa Fronczak, took her to doctors. After a long period of observation, a council of eight doctors found her healthy. Her catechist, Fr. Feliks Szmit, was sceptical at first. He told her to write the messages down, and that diary became the core record. Later, Fr. Paweł Kosiak passed the documents to Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, who visited several times and promised a church.

In 2013 the Piarists asked Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz to confirm the visions. The Warsaw curia set up a historical-theological commission. It found the description consistent with Catholic teaching. That is not formal recognition, and the Church has not ruled on whether the apparitions are authentic.

Explanations

No hoax allegation appears in the record. No sceptic has published an explanation. What remains is the shape of the evidence. A single child witness at dusk, looking through a window at a cherry tree in white blossom. Wartime stress. A girl who had just been praying for people in danger. She said herself that people did not believe her, and that she would have doubted it too.

Legacy

A wooden chapel came first. Between 1946 and 1949 another was built from the rubble of Warsaw. A church was consecrated in 1994, and in 1997 it became the Piarist-run Sanctuary of Our Lady, Teacher of Youth. Its image, painted by Maria Wollenberg-Kluza, follows her descriptions. As Władysława Papis, she gave testimony at the chapel until her death in 2016. Later commentators read the warnings as foretelling the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and the city's destruction.
