Silesia. 20 September 1591. Early on a Friday morning, a shoemaker cut his own throat in the back part of his house. The household spoke of a stroke, and he was buried in consecrated ground. About six weeks later, the rumours began. Then the shoemaker began to walk. He came at night and at midday, in his exact form. He lay on sleepers like an ephialtes, the old name for the nightmare. People woke with bruises and the plain impressions of his fingers. The town council dug him up. Twice. By May 1592, nothing was left of him but ashes in a river.

Context

Silesia, 1591. On 20 September, "on a Friday betimes in the morning", a shoemaker cut his throat with his shoemaker's knife in the back part of his house, beside a small garden. The household wanted a Christian burial, so they told another story. He had died of a stroke. On 22 September he was buried in consecrated ground.
