Spring 1810. An old thatched house in Higher Town, Sampford Peverell, Devon. It has been let to John Chave as a shop and a home. Then the knocking starts. Stamp on the floor five or six times, and something answers. Louder. More. At night it is worse. The maids say they are beaten by an invisible hand. Bed-curtains whirl. A crushing weight presses on the sleepers. A candlestick flies at Chave's head. The Rev. Charles Caleb Colton spends six nights in the house, seals every door, and swears he cannot explain any of it. A newspaper editor calls it a conspiracy. A year later, a mob comes to the door. A man dies.
