27 December 1673. Paray-le-Monial, Burgundy. At the chapel grille of the Visitation convent, before the Blessed Sacrament, a 26-year-old nun lost all sense of where she was. Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque later wrote that she saw a heart "as in a throne of flame, more radiant than a sun and transparent as a crystal." A crown of thorns surrounded it. Over about 18 months the visions came back. Flames. Five shining wounds. A voice asking for a feast. She was the only one who saw anything. Theologians judged her deluded. Some sisters called her mad. Yet what she described would spread through the whole Catholic Church.

Context

The Monastery of the Visitation of Holy Mary, at Paray-le-Monial in Burgundy. Margaret Mary Alacoque had made her profession there on 6 November 1672. She was 26 and worked in the infirmary. Visions were not new to her. At about 17, after a Carnival ball, she reported seeing a scourged, bloodied Christ reproaching her.
