Chiquinquirá, in the highlands near Tunja. Friday, 26 December 1586. About nine in the morning. María Ramos had prayed for more than two hours before a faded canvas that had been left to rot. As she left the chapel, a Muisca woman named Isabel passed the door with her small son, Miguel. The boy saw it first. The image of the Virgin was standing on the floor. It gave off a light that filled the whole chapel. It looked as if it were burning. Its colours were alive again. About two weeks later, a priest and a royal notary arrived to take sworn statements, and a painting nobody wanted became the patroness of a nation.

Context

Around 1562, the painter Alonso de Narváez made an image for Antonio de Santana, who held an encomienda of the Indians of Suta. Tempera on a cotton manta, 125 by 119 cm. The Virgin of the Rosary holding the Child, with St Anthony of Padua on one side and St Andrew on the other. The chapel at Suta had a leaking roof, and humidity ruined the canvas. By 1577 or 1578 it was too faded for the altar. It went to the Santana property at Chiquinquirá, in what is now Boyacá, Colombia. By some accounts it was used to dry seeds or grain.
