October 1974. In St Thomas's Church, Gawber, a group of believers worked through the night over one man. Michael Taylor, a butcher from Ossett, was tied to the floor. Crucifixes were put in his mouth. Holy water doused him. By their own count they cast out at least forty demons. Three, they believed, remained. Murder. Violence. Insanity. In the early morning they sent him home. Hours later his wife Christine was dead, killed with his bare hands. A court found him not guilty by reason of insanity. The aftermath reshaped how the Church of England handled exorcism.
