Sunday, 4 November 1696. In a small wooden church at Pócs, in north-eastern Hungary, the Divine Liturgy was under way. A local farmer, Mihály Eőry, looked at the icon of the Virgin on the iconostasis. Tears were flowing from both eyes. They kept flowing. With breaks, until 8 December. An imperial general had the panel taken down and checked for fraud. He found none, and wiped the tears in front of about 300 people. A bishop took sworn testimony. An emperor sent for the icon. And the copy left behind in the village would weep again. In 1715. And in 1905.

Context

Pócs was a village in the Nyírség, in Szabolcs county. Its Greek Catholic church was built of wood. On the iconostasis stood an image of the Virgin Hodegetria, tempera on maple, painted by István Papp, the priest's brother. The village judge, László Csigri, later testified that he had commissioned it in 1675 for 6 Hungarian forints, to fulfil a vow after a serious illness.
