June 1647. A violent thunderstorm had just passed over New Haven from the northwest. About an hour before sunset, people on the shore looked toward the mouth of the harbour and saw a ship coming in. It was sailing in the air. She was the same size as the Great Shippe, the vessel the colony had sent to England that January and never heard from again. Her canvas was spread and her colours were flying. She sailed against the wind. Then, so close that spectators imagined they could throw a stone aboard, she began to break apart. Mast by mast. She rolled over and vanished into a smoky cloud. The colony took it as God's answer to their prayers.

The Great Shippe

New Haven Colony had a problem. It had been settled from Massachusetts, not England, and it had no ship of its own. Trading ventures to the West Indies kept failing. The colonists watched their estates "sink so fast, that they must quickly do something."
