Reykjavík. December 1907. In a small back house on Þingholtsstræti, a young medium named Indriði Indriðason could no longer sleep alone. That autumn, on the Westman Islands, he said he had seen the ghost of a drowned man. Now his rooms had turned violent. A plate flew. Lamp glass shattered. The bed rose and shook. Witnesses said Indriði himself was lifted into the air and dragged across the floor while they pulled at his legs. The men keeping watch belonged to the Experimental Society, formed to study him. One night they fled to the home of its founder and turned on all the lights. The disturbances, they said, followed them.
