June 2017. A girl in Pipar City, Rajasthan, woke one morning to find her hair cut. Three days later in Bikaner, a woman said a witch had cut her braid while she slept. Then it spread. Haryana. Delhi. Uttar Pradesh. Jammu. Kashmir. Women described a strong flash of light, a tug on the hair, a sudden faint. One saw a thin man carrying a trident. Another saw a large figure that resembled a cat. In Kashmir, it was masked men with a spray. When the women woke, the braid lay beside them. Four months of reports followed, and two elderly people died after mob attacks. Nobody was ever caught.
