Tuesday, 10 November 2015. About 9:30 pm. Natalie Kay, 28, was driving a Vauxhall Zafira along Doe Hey Road in Farnworth, on the edge of Bolton. Something large was in the road ahead. It stopped. It stared. Kay later described a long tail, pointed ears and "these greedy yellow eyes". It was "about the same size as the bonnet of my car". Then it bolted down a dirt track between two reservoirs. "It dashed off and was really fast." The town already had a name for it. The Beast of Bolton, a black cat reported in local parks and woodland since 2006, had been quiet for years. Now, it seemed, it was back.

The creature

A large black, panther-like cat, "much bigger" than a domestic cat and "about the same size as the bonnet" of the witness's car. It had a long tail, pointed ears and "greedy yellow eyes". It stopped in the road and stared, then "dashed off and was really fast" down a dirt track between two reservoirs.

Context

Bolton had been here before. ITV Granada traced the first recorded encounter to 2006, when a large cat was seen "in parkland around the town." More reports followed from park and woodland, and The Bolton News wrote of "numerous sightings of a mysterious black creature stalking the town". Then the reports dried up, though how long for depends on who you ask. The Bolton News headline spoke of a five year absence, its own text said three years, and Historic Bolton puts the previous sighting in 2010.
