Arensburg, on the island of Oesel. 1844. Horses tied in front of the Buxhoewden family chapel began to tremble, sweat and foam. One day eleven were affected together. Three or four died. Then, during a funeral, groans and strange noises rose from the vault beneath the chapel. Three or four people went down and found the coffins "displaced and lay in a confused pile". A commission of churchmen, a physician and the burgomaster sealed the vault, spread fine wood ash over every floor and set soldiers on guard for three days and three nights. When they opened it, the ash was unbroken. The coffins had moved again.

Context

Arensburg was the only town on Oesel, an island of the Russian Empire. Today they are Kuressaare and Saaremaa, in Estonia. In the town's public Lutheran cemetery stood the chapel of the Buxhoewden family, "adorned with pillars in front". Beneath it lay the family vault.
