Galway. An evening at the turn of 1891, as near as anyone can now date it. Children on their way to devotions noticed a sort of unusual light in a house on Abbeygate Street, directly opposite the sacristy of the Pro Cathedral of St Nicholas. A woman stood near the open window. In a sepulchral voice, she said, "offer one prayer for me." Some of the children fainted on the spot. Within a quarter of an hour, no less than 2000 persons had packed the streets outside. Several were thrown down and trampled. Police needed about three hours to clear the way. And on the nights that followed, the crowds came back.

The house on Abbeygate Street

Galway, Ireland. Abbeygate Street, directly opposite the sacristy of the Pro Cathedral of St Nicholas. The house there had lately been occupied by a woman who died after a very short illness. Another tenant moved in, then left, "from some cause or another." The house stood unoccupied until the week of the sighting. That evening was its first night occupied again.
