The Sewen Light Formation Sighting

September 3, 1973 · Near Sewen, Doller Valley, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France

Monday, 3 September 1973. Afternoon in the Doller Valley, near the village of Sewen. A retired couple from Mulhouse had stopped for a picnic under an absolutely cloudless sky. Then they saw it. A bright, luminous object to the north, ringed by tiny points of light. The main object slipped away northward. The small lights stayed. First they settled into a circle. Then they rearranged themselves into an isosceles triangle, pointing upward. For somewhere between eight minutes and more than a quarter of an hour, the couple watched. One of them later drew the whole thing in three panels for a small ufology group in Mulhouse. The case was never solved.

Context

In September 1973, the Doller Valley in Haut-Rhin was a quiet place for a day out. Sewen sits at the head of the valley, below the Ballon d'Alsace. Down in Mulhouse, a small group of mostly young ufologists, the GREI, was collecting sightings from across southern Alsace. It never published a bulletin of its own, but it kept files. This is one of them.
