New Year's Day, 1975. Before dawn on the Páramo de Masa, north of Burgos. Four conscripts were heading back to their barracks in a white Mini 850, returning from leave in Cantabria. The driver, Manuel Agüera, saw a star that shone almost unnaturally. He stopped the car. About half a kilometre away, a very bright light came down fast and settled over a road junction near Quintanaortuño. A flattened truncated cone. White-yellowish light. No sound. Then its light went out, and four lights came on, one after another. The soldiers drove off, nervous and fearful. Their story went up the chain of command, into a confidential military report, and stayed there until 1993.
January 1975. Manuel Agüera, José Laso Pérez, Ricardo Iglesias López and Felipe Sánchez were conscripts doing their military service at the Academia de Ingenieros in Burgos. They had spent New Year's leave in Cantabria and had to report back by reveille. At about 04:31 they left a bar in Torrelavega in a white Mini 850. Laso Pérez was picked up at Ontaneda. Agüera was at the wheel.
