July 23, 1952. 8:40 in the morning. Three F-94 jet interceptors were in the sky near Pottstown, Pennsylvania, each with a two-man crew. Then the crews saw it. One large silver object, shaped like a long pear, with two or three squares beneath it. It moved slowly and steadily, at 150 to 180 knots. Around it flew something else. A smaller object, delta-shaped or swept back, circling at 1,000 to 1,500 knots. The crews watched for one to four minutes. Project Blue Book could not explain it. The case went into the files as an Unknown, in the middle of the great July 1952 wave.

Context

Summer, 1952. America was in the middle of a national wave of UFO reports. Two radar weekends over Washington, D.C. framed the month of July. The night before Pottstown, Dover AFB F-94 crews had chased blue-white lights over Trenton, New Jersey, a flap Brad Sparks later catalogued as Blue Book Unknown case 711. By morning, that was over. Pottstown was a separate story.

The sighting

Wednesday, July 23, 1952. 8:40 a.m. Three USAF F-94 Starfire interceptors were in the air near Pottstown, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Each carried two men, a pilot and a radar operator. Six airmen in all.

They saw one large silver object. It was "shaped like a long pear with two or three squares beneath it." It flew slowly and steadily, at 150 to 180 knots. It was not alone. A smaller object, "delta-shaped or swept back," flew around it at 1,000 to 1,500 knots. Several times faster than the craft it circled. The record ends simply. "Seen by crews for 1-4 minutes."

Two versions of the story

In 2021 the journalist James McGinnis revisited the case for the Bucks County Courier Times. His account is different. Three F-94 Starfire jets cruising at 644 miles per hour. A silver "large pear-shaped" object with no visible means of propulsion. And two smaller, darker objects that "appeared to run circles around the larger craft for approximately 30 minutes."

Two companions instead of one. Thirty minutes instead of four. McGinnis did not say where the extra details came from. His article also placed the encounter northeast of Philadelphia. Pottstown lies to the northwest.

Investigation

Project Blue Book listed Pottstown among its Unknowns for 1952. NICAP, The Black Vault and Patrick Gross all carry the same entry. No names of the crews appear in the published lists. No unit or base is recorded. There are no photographs, no film and no radar return for this case.

The paper trail has its own troubles. An old text copy of the Blue Book list shifted its lines, giving the pear to Trenton and a "phosphorus light" to Pottstown. In a 2024 review of the July 1952 files, Tim Printy found that some cases could not be located at all, and some dates were wrong because of clerical errors in the master list.

Explanations

No hoax has ever been alleged. No conventional explanation has been published. One possibility raised since is a high-altitude research balloon carrying instrument packages, a common culprit for daytime silver objects in 1952. A silver shape with boxes below fits that picture. But the crews reported a speed far too fast for a drifting balloon. And a balloon does not account for a second object circling it at high speed.

Legacy

That same day, at 12:50 p.m., two more F-94 crews over Altoona reported three cylindrical objects in a vertical stack. Blue Book left both cases unexplained. Pottstown remains a quiet entry in a loud summer. A silver pear, a swept-back companion circling it, and six airmen who watched them both.
