Monday, 21 August 2006. Late evening in northern Norway. After a summer of midnight sun, the sky had only just started getting dark again. Then a light raced across it. White, green and gold, with a very long tail and sparks blowing off it like a sparkler. Calls reached the police, the rescue centre and Coast Guard radio from Finnsnes in Troms to Bodø in Nordland, and as far south as Trondheim. An SAS crew saw it. So did a Hurtigruten ship. The police said they could not explain it. Radar had tracked nothing. By the next morning, an astronomer had an answer.
Northern Norway, late August 2006. After the summer's midnight sun, the night sky had only recently started getting dark again. It had already been a busy season overhead. Aftenposten counted at least two meteorites hitting Norway since June.
