June 1966. Mount Mitchell State Park, North Carolina. A group of Boy Scouts were camping on the mountain when three red lights appeared in a triangle and came toward them. Then they stopped. And stayed. For about five hours the lights pulsed, each at its own rhythm, the center one flashing white on every fifth beat. At sunrise the scouts raised their binoculars. They saw a red, bell-shaped object lift away, flanked by six smaller companions that shifted formation before slipping behind a mountain. Near the camp they found broken branches and three holes in an equilateral triangle. Project Blue Book filed the case. It stayed unidentified.
