The Martebo Lights (Marteboljuset)

March 1922 · Martebo, Gotland (forest road near Knutstorp, about 2 km north of Martebo myr), Sweden

March 1922. One evening on the Martebo mire in north-west Gotland, a family saw a light. The next day the father and the uncle searched the snow. There were no tracks. The family moved to Knutstorp. From autumn 1923 the light drifted between the pine trunks almost every night. The mother called it Oskar. In the decades since, people on a straight forest road near Stenkyrkavägen have watched a silent glowing ball float about a metre above the ground, glide towards them and go out. UFO-Sverige spent years on the case. Most sightings, its investigator concluded, are distant car headlights. A few reports remain hard to explain.

Context

Martebo is a rural parish in north-west Gotland, about 25 km north of Visby. Its mire, Martebo myr, once covered 1,560 hectares and was drained in the late 1800s. Yet the light that bears its name is mostly seen elsewhere. UFO-Sverige places the hotspot at Nordermyr, about 2 km north, on a side road off Stenkyrkavägen near Knutstorp. A straight forest road. Trees on both sides. The light appears only in darkness.
