Jerusalem. The nones of May, 351. About the third hour of the morning. Above Golgotha, a vast luminous body in the form of a cross appeared in the heavens. It reached as far as the Mount of Olives. Bishop Cyril wrote that it was brighter than the sun. It stayed for several hours. It was seen, he insisted, not by one or two persons but by the whole city. Young and old, Christians and heathens, citizens and strangers ran to the church. Cyril reported the sign to Emperor Constantius II. His letter is still read aloud at Golgotha on the feast day, and scholars still argue over what hung in that morning sky.

Context

In 351 the Roman world was at war with itself. Emperor Constantius II was fighting the usurper Magnentius, and the Sasanian threat loomed in the east. The bishop of Jerusalem was Cyril. Socrates Scholasticus records that Acacius and Patrophilus installed him after removing Maximus.
