December 1947. France was shaken by insurrectionary strikes. On 2 and 3 December the Paris-Tourcoing mail train was derailed, leaving 16 dead. In L'Île-Bouchard, in Indre-et-Loire, the nuns asked their pupils to pray to the Virgin for France on 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
