February 5, 1971. Late afternoon in the snowbound woods of Kangaskylä, in the Finnish municipality of Kinnula. Two lumberjacks are finishing the day's work. Then something comes down through the treetops. A metallic craft, shaped like two saucers put together, settles on four thin legs about 15 meters away. A small figure in a green suit glides to the snow. Where its face should be, there is a lens. For two decades the story travelled the world as a classic close encounter. Then the man who first published it, on April Fools' Day, confessed.

Context

Early 1971. Finland was in the grip of a UFO boom. Kinnula is a small municipality in Central Finland, and in its village of Kangaskylä the forests run deep and the winter days are short.
