August 1977. Houetteville, a small village in Normandy between Évreux and Louviers. At about 1:30 in the morning, a couple watched a light brighter than the stars move towards their home. It stopped. Two red lights flickered on top. Then it shot upward, turned yellow, then orange, and was gone. A week later, a glowing egg about 2 m long sat silently in a harvested barley field on the bank of the Iton. Gendarmes came. They found three holes in a triangle and stubble flattened as if by a blast. GEPAN, France's official UFO office, opened a file. It was never identified.

Context

Houetteville is a village in the Eure, in Normandy, set between Évreux and Louviers. The river Iton runs past its château. In 1977 France had just created GEPAN, an official office inside CNES for studying unidentified aerospace phenomena. That summer, this quiet commune gave it a case.
