July 16, 1969. A summer evening on a farm in Alberta's Peace River Country. A neighbour phoned Mrs. Steve Tachit with news of something in the sky. Mrs. Tachit stepped into the yard. There it was. Large and white, drifting so slowly that its movement was hard to see. The family brought out binoculars and a rifle telescope. Up close, the object looked brown, covered in large, scallopy convolutions. There was no obvious mode of propulsion. Other residents of the Hines Creek district saw it too. It was visible for miles around. Mrs. Tachit summed it up simply. "It sort of had us puzzled."

Context

Hines Creek is a small village in Clear Hills County, in the Peace River Country of northern Alberta. It sits on Highway 64, about 28 km north of Fairview. On July 16, 1969, much of the world was looking up. That same day, Apollo 11 lifted off for the Moon. By evening the spacecraft was far beyond Earth orbit. It had nothing to do with what the Tachit family was about to see.
