Dighton, Kansas. 1972. A small county seat on the western plains, and a light that would not leave it alone. It was red-orange and white. It hovered until a patrol car came close. Then it moved away. Police chief M.R. Shelton chased it at speeds of up to 100 miles an hour. He never caught it. It ran parallel to his car, or slightly ahead. Near the hamlet of Amy, 18-year-old Pam Krehbiel watched a bright object come within about 100 yards of her car. It filled the whole windshield. On her family's farm, a circle 20 feet across was found burned into the green wheat. The Air Force said the flights were not theirs.

Context

Kansas, 1972. The state reportedly logged the most UFO sightings in the nation that year, more than 40 reports, and no town had more than Dighton, the county seat of Lane County. Accounts differ on when it began. One newspaper said January, a wire story said February, and later retellings say spring. All agree it ran on through the summer.
