Dereham, Norfolk. Wednesday 11 May 1977, around 9.30pm. Marilyn Lorton turned her car out of the Market Place. Beside her sat her cousin, Stewart Bennett, on his way to a Chinese takeaway. Then he looked up. A metallic saucer, about 30ft long, was crossing the sky from east to west. A row of portholes ran along its top. One glowed orange. Beneath it, a red light pulsed. It made no sound. It flew no higher than forty feet above the roof tops, about 100 yards away, for at least 15 seconds. "It was a flying saucer," Bennett said. "That is the only way to describe it."
