Booysens, western Pretoria. July 2010. Shortly after sunset, three lights appeared low in the western sky. A blue light and an emerald green light sat side by side. Beneath them, a big bright white light shone straight down. They did not move. For two hours, neighbours on Attie Street stood and watched. At about 20:30 the lights began to sink, down and to the left, until they slipped behind the horizon. The next night, they came back and did it all again. The police, the Johannesburg Planetarium and the South African Air Force had no answer. No published explanation has followed.

The object

Three bright lights low in the western sky: a blue light and an emerald green light side by side on top, and a big bright white light underneath that shone straight down. The witnesses could not make out a shape, though it 'almost had a heart shape'. It hung motionless for two hours, then slowly sank diagonally to the left below the horizon.

Context

Booysens is a suburb in western Pretoria, in Gauteng. It is not the Booysens in Johannesburg. In July 2010, residents of one of its streets spent two evenings looking west at something none of them could name.
