January 15, 1987. Belleville, Wisconsin. A village police officer named Glen Kazmar and his passenger, Jeff Furseth, watched a tight cluster of red, white and blue lights hang in the sky west of town. No sound. No visible structure. Just lights, wavering close together in a straight line, much brighter than a star. Kazmar called it in. Deputies in two counties took reports that same night, and radar in Chicago reportedly tracked something slow moving in the area. Over the following weeks, residents described wingless, cigar-shaped craft. A small village learned to look up.

Context

Belleville is a small village on the line between Dane and Green counties in southern Wisconsin. In the winter of 1987 it became the centre of a UFO flap that, by one count, ran from mid-January through early April.
