Leicester. 23 December 1998. 4:50 am. Rain falls on the grounds of Belgrave Hall, an old Queen Anne house that now serves as a museum. An exterior security camera is triggered. It records in black and white, frame by frame. What it caught would make the national news. Some saw two luminous white figures. Others saw one large white shape outside a rear window. It turned, moved off, and climbed over a nearby wall. Then it was gone. The curator was convinced he was looking at ghosts. Popular accounts gave one of them a name, Charlotte Ellis. American investigators came to look. Their verdict was a falling leaf. Not everyone agreed.

Context

Belgrave Hall stands on Church Road in Belgrave, Leicester, beside St Peter's Church. Edmund Cradock, a Leicester hosiery merchant, built it between 1709 and 1713. The Ellis family lived there from 1845 to 1923, and their daughters were known as the "Belgrave sisters". Leicester City Council took it over in 1936 and has run it as a museum ever since.
