The night of 10 May 1957. Beaucourt-sur-l'Ancre, a village in the Somme. Michel Fekete, a 29-year-old Hungarian refugee, was cycling home. A powerful light blinded him. He hid behind a telegraph pole. Then he saw them. Four little men, dressed in grey, walking toward him in a threatening manner. He raced to the railway station, shouting that a flying saucer had landed. From the Lepot house nearby, neighbours watched a glowing light shift between red and white over the field. Afterwards, gendarmes found strange black plaques on the road. Then the mayor offered his own answer. A lantern. And some cows.

Context

Beaucourt-sur-l'Ancre is a small commune in the Somme, near Albert. In 1957 it had a railway station and a quiet road beside it. For one night in May, that road became the centre of a story that split the village in two.
