July 1959. On the islands of Alor and Pantar, in eastern Indonesia, villagers began to see strangers. About six of them. Tall, ruddy-skinned, with wavy white hair and dark-blue uniforms. When villagers fired arrows at one, it jumped high over their heads and was gone. At night the figures opened windows and looked into houses. A small boy vanished for a day. Then the police chief sent armed men to the edge of Kalabahi. Around midnight they opened fire. No blood. No bodies. Only damaged trees, and footprints that simply stopped. After the shooting, a white-glowing oval object raced low over the sea, west to east. The visitors were never reported again.
Alor lies in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, with Pantar just across a narrow strait. In 1959 the police office for the Alor Islands was headed by Alwi Alnadad. What he later described took place in July of that year, over several days. Perhaps about a week.
