A historian and anthropologist, William A. Christian Jr. wrote about Spain's visions and moving images. At Limpias, he counted over a quarter of a million pilgrims between 1919 and 1926. About one in ten reported movement. His book Moving Crucifixes in Modern Spain appeared in 1992. In 1996 he told the story of the Ezkioga apparitions in Visionaries. For Garabandal, he offered a sociological reading, linking the visions to the threat to traditional belief felt during the Second Vatican Council.
