A NASA scientist who later studied encounters between aircraft and UFOs. Richard F. Haines brought a careful, technical eye to photographs and pilot reports. In the Hannah McRoberts case of 1981 he obtained the original negative and the camera and went back to the site with the family. He found no sign of a hoax. With Jacques Vallée he analysed the Lago de Cote photograph from Costa Rica. Their 1989 paper concluded that an unidentified, opaque aerial object had been captured on film. In 2007 he led NARCAP's report of about 155 pages on the O'Hare sighting. The report treated the object as a flight-safety risk.
